Philosophy
At Children’s Garden Pre-School, we hope to provide a place where children can be children for as long as possible and where those special qualities of childhood have an opportunity to show themselves. Play and imagination are hallmarks of childhood and are very important aspects of development. Stories, fairy tales, and puppet-plays let the children explore roles and situations in their imaginations and play. Singing and movement are as natural for a child as breathing. All these things are integral to the Waldorf curriculum.
The curriculum of a Waldorf pre-school revolves around the seasons of the year and in creating a rhythm within those seasons. The stories, circle times, crafts, and festivals flow and change along with the changes in our natural world. The children experience a sense of security and safety in this rhythmical dance through the year. And within this security, they are able to find comfort within a social group, they are able to find their own sense of self, and they are able to develop a spark and a love for what they experience in school.
Children’s Garden Pre-School strives to create an atmosphere that is worthy of young children’s intense desire to imitate and that nourishes their thirsty senses. The colors in the rooms, the activities that are presented, the movements in circle times, the natural materials that fill the school…all these are intentional and help to nourish the senses and the consciousness of the developing child. We want to provide for the children a strong base from which they can successfully enter into the more abstract world that awaits them. Theirs is a special time, and we wish to honor it and to protect and nourish it.
This spark and love for experiences and for learning is cultivated all through the Waldorf curriculum. In these early years, we are striving to give the children a sense that there is beauty in the world, that there is truth in the world, and that there is goodness in the world. When a child experiences these, they can go forth with self-confidence and enthusiasm to meet the challenges and opportunities their life will hold. These are our goals at Children’s Garden Pre-School.
